Human trafficking is already a real issue in our city, and the 2018 Super Bowl in Minneapolis will bring the issue to a new level of dysfunction.
Over 10,000 individuals - many of whom were trafficking victims - were brought into Miami for the Super Bowl in 2010 to serve in the sex industry. During the Dallas Super Bowl in 2011, there were 133 arrests for sex with minors, according to the Nat'l Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
Researchers from Arizona State University studied online sex ads for 10 days surrounding the 2014 Super Bowl in New Jersey and found that ad volume spiked leading up to the event and dissipated afterward. At least half the ads appeared to involve sex trafficking victims.
Local organizations making a difference in our city need to be resourced to be more effective and our community needs to be made aware of the issue and be equipped to help.
Off the Streets Super Run 5K walk/run is on February 4, 2017 in the concourse of Target Field. 100% of proceeds go toward fighting human trafficking in our city.
Off the Streets Super Run will benefit 3 organizations:
The Link, a non-profit based in north Minneapolis whose mission is to build a supportive community network that strengthens and transforms the lives of youth and their families through education, advocacy, housing and social services.
Breaking Free, an organization committed to ending all forms of prostitution and sex trafficking. Each year they help over 500 women escape systems of prostitution and sexual exploitation through advocacy, direct services, housing and education.
Source, an organization offering hope and opportunity in the city. Through urban outreach and anti-trafficking efforts, Source empowers the at-risk and unreached to make a break from the past and build foundations for the future.
